Benefits of compressing images

Faster websites

Smaller images reduce loading time and improve the browsing experience.

Lower data usage

A smaller file uses less bandwidth when downloaded or shared.

Better mobile performance

Compression especially helps users browsing on mobile connections.

Easier file sharing

Reducing file size makes images easier to send by email, messaging or forms.

How to choose the quality level

Higher quality preserves more detail but usually creates larger files.

A medium quality level is often enough for websites, posts and general use.

Low quality can greatly reduce file size, but it may also introduce visible blur or compression artifacts.

Compare the preview and final size before downloading.

Privacy

Private browser compression

The image is processed locally with Canvas. The file is not sent to SG Hub or stored on a server.

JPG, PNG or WebP: which format should you use?

JPG

JPG

Suitable for photographs and files where smaller size matters. It does not support transparency.

PNG

PNG

Useful for logos, graphics, screenshots and files that need transparency.

WebP

WebP

Offers a strong balance between quality and size and is often a great option for websites.

Common use cases

  • Optimize images before uploading them to a website.
  • Reduce photo size before sending by email.
  • Prepare images for social media.
  • Reduce ecommerce product image size.
  • Optimize screenshots.
  • Convert photos to WebP.
  • Reduce storage usage.
  • Improve mobile loading times.

Compression limitations

PNG uses lossless compression and may not shrink much when keeping the same format.

Converting to WebP or JPG often reduces file size more than keeping PNG.

Very low quality may produce visible loss of detail.

The result depends on the original format, resolution and compression.
