What does resizing an image mean?

Resizing an image means changing the number of pixels that make up its width and height.

For example, a 4000 × 3000 pixel image can be reduced to 1200 × 900 pixels to use less storage and load faster on a website.

You can also increase the dimensions, although enlarging an image too much may reduce sharpness because the browser has to generate new pixels from the available information.

Why preserve the aspect ratio?

The aspect ratio describes the relationship between the original width and height.

When only one dimension is changed without adjusting the other proportionally, the image may become stretched horizontally or vertically.

The preserve aspect ratio option automatically calculates the second dimension to keep the original shape.

Differences between JPG, PNG and WebP

Choose the format based on the image, transparency and final file size you need.

JPG

JPG

Useful for photographs and smaller files. It does not support transparency.

PNG

PNG

Preserves transparency and is often suitable for logos, screenshots, graphics and images with sharp edges.

WebP

WebP

Provides good quality with generally smaller files and is suitable for modern websites.

Limitations

The result depends on the quality and resolution of the original image.

Increasing dimensions cannot recover details that do not exist in the original file.

Extremely large images may exceed browser memory or canvas limits.
