Calculation method

How to calculate concrete block quantity

First calculate the gross wall area by multiplying wall length by wall height. For several identical walls, multiply the result by the number of walls.

Next subtract the surface area of doors, windows and other openings to determine the net masonry area.

Finally divide the net area by the modular face area of the block, including the visible dimensions and mortar joint.

Blocks = net area ÷ modular block area

After including a 10% waste allowance, the recommended total is approximately:

Doors, windows and wall layout

Subtracting openings improves the estimate, but cuts around doors and windows may still generate additional waste.

Wall layout can affect the number of full blocks, half blocks, special units and cuts required during construction.

Before purchasing materials, review drawings, dimensions and intersections with columns, beams and other elements.

Structural walls

Block quantity does not determine whether a wall can carry loads or resist lateral forces.

Structural walls may require foundations, vertical and horizontal reinforcement, bond beams, columns, filled cells and engineering specifications.

Actual size, nominal size and joints

A commercial or nominal block size may include the intended mortar joint. Confirm the actual visible dimensions before calculating.

Small differences in block length, block height or joint thickness can change the number of units required per square meter.

How do I calculate how many concrete blocks I need for a wall?

What is the modular face area of a block?

It is the visible block area including the mortar joint. It provides a more realistic estimate of how many blocks fit within one square meter of wall.

How many 40 × 20 cm concrete blocks are used per square meter?

With joints close to 10 mm, the estimated quantity is generally around 11.5 to 12.5 blocks per square meter.

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?

Yes. You can add multiple openings and enter the width, height and quantity of each door or window.

What waste allowance should I include?

Is the mortar estimate exact?
