VAT is a tax added to the net price of a product or service. In many cases, you may need to calculate the final price with VAT or separate VAT that is already included in a total amount.
To add VAT to a net price, use this formula:
Net price x VAT percentage / 100
Then add that result to the net price.
For example, if a service costs $1000 without VAT and VAT is 22%:
1000 x 22 / 100 = 220
VAT is $220.
The final price would be:
1000 + 220 = 1220
When the price already includes VAT, the calculation is different. To get the net amount, divide the total by 1 plus the VAT percentage expressed as a decimal.
For example, if the total is $1220 with 22% VAT included:
1220 / 1.22 = 1000
The net amount is $1000 and the included VAT is $220.
This difference is important for estimates, invoicing, sales control, professional services and cost analysis.
